How to Build in Build and Defend Your Raft
Compact cores beat sprawl — Hour 1 boats versus Hour 100 forts, storage versus footprint.
Building in Build and Defend Your Raft is how the tiny wooden spawn boat becomes the multi-story fortress in the official thumbs: cannons on the corners, spikes on the rim, chests inside, flags on top. Those thumbs are a direction, not a shopping list. This page is about footprint, not invented plank recipes. Expand the deck, keep storage close to the Crafting Table, and do not grow a pier you cannot shoot from. Pair it with the Crafting Table upgrade loop and how to defend once walls exist.
The game is live online PvP. Every tile you place is a tile a raider can stand on. Build like that is true.
Expand the deck — then stop
You need floor. Harpoon junk, convert it into raft pieces, and grow enough tiles to stand, store, and place a table. That is the official expand step. The mistake is treating “bigger” as “better.” A long runway of empty wood is a gift: raiders get a walking path, cannons cannot cover both ends, and your chest sits a marathon from the guns. Grow until you have a core — table, chests, a ring of walls — then stop until that core is armed.
If you do not know a piece’s cost because the UI has not shown it, do not copy a fake recipe from a comment. Place what the build menu actually offers. Saturday patches can add pieces; they do not require you to sprawl on Friday night.
Compact versus sprawl
Compact means short walking distances between harpoon landings, the Crafting Table, and loot. Spikes and cannons overlap. A raider who boards is already in gun range. Crewmates can hold the same ring without sprinting the length of a pier.
Sprawl means a wide, one-tile-thick island with flags at the far end and chests in the open. It photographs like an Hour 100 fort from a distance and plays like an Hour 1 boat when someone actually boards. Official Hour 100 images are stacked and dense — multiple stories, cannons, spikes, chests, flags together — not a scattered archipelago.
Choose compact unless you have a reason to add a specific platform (cannon angle, extra storage room after the table has been fed). Even then, add one platform, arm it, then add the next.
Hour 1 versus Hour 100
Hour 1 is the spawn boat: low, open, hungry for gather objectives. Your build job is a closed box around loot and the table, not a replica of the trailer skyline. Hour 100 is that box grown up and thick, not out. Stack stories when the table has unlocked the gear to hold them. Put chests on an inner floor, cannons covering approaches, spikes on the board-on edges, flags last because they do not unlock weapons.
If your current raft looks like Hour 100 from one camera angle and Hour 1 from the chest camera, you have sprawl with cosmetics. Fix the chest camera first. Ranked layouts and what we can actually compare live on the raft builds tier list.
Storage versus footprint
Loot is why people raid you. Storage should sit in the smallest defensible footprint that still lets you dump harpoon hauls without a hike. Extra footprint that does not hold a chest, a gun, or a spike is a tax. Ask three questions before you place a tile:
- Does this tile hold loot, the table, or a defensive piece?
- Can a cannon on the core still see a raider who stands on it?
- If I am mid-raid on someone else, can Crew hold this tile without abandoning the chest?
If the answer is no three times, skip the tile and feed the table instead. Resources spent on empty floor are resources not spent on the upgrade that unlocks better gear.
Build order that respects PvP
- Enough floor to stand and store.
- Crafting Table upgrades.
- Walls and spikes around loot.
- Cannons on the approaches.
- Extra stories or width.
- Flags and vanity.
Skip straight to 5 and 6 and you will rebuild after the first steal. The how to defend page is the armament pass that turns this order into a shell. Come back to building after a Saturday patch only if new pieces change those six steps — not because the empty ocean still looks tempting.
Grow a core you can hold, then grow it upward. That is how Hour 1 becomes Hour 100 without donating the chest on the way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common raft, raid, and code questions.
How do I expand my raft in Build and Defend Your Raft?
Harpoon resources, then place deck from the build UI. Grow a compact core around the Crafting Table and chests; do not throw out a long unarmed pier.
Should I copy the Hour 100 fortress first?
No. Hour 1 needs a closed loot box. Hour 100 in the official thumbs is dense and stacked — cannons, spikes, chests, flags together — after the table has been fed.
Are there published piece recipes?
Not on this wiki. We do not invent plank counts. Place what the live menu shows and put Scrap into the Crafting Table first.
Where should chests go?
Inside the smallest ring you can defend, next to the table, not on an open rim. Arm that ring using how to defend. Compare layouts on the raft builds tier list.
