Build and Defend Your Raft Defense tier list
Walls, cannons, spikes, and where the chest actually lives.
Defense in Build and Defend Your Raft is a loop, not a shopping list. The game is live Roblox PvP (max 18) from Raft Pirates, released 28 July 2026. Raiders board on a timer. Gatherers leave the deck. Loot sits in chests. Official art shows cannons, spikes, and multi-story rafts — enough to rank placement, not enough to invent health values or recipes. This page scores walls, cannons, spikes, and loot spots against that raid loop. Pair it with weapon rankings and raft build rankings. For the session checklist, use how to defend your raft.
The raid loop we rank against
A typical hold looks like this: someone is on the harpoon, someone is near the Crafting Table, someone is watching the water. A raid starts. The timer is now a budget. If your chest is on the outer plank, the raid is already over. If your cannon cannot see the board angle, the wall is only a delay. If spikes exist but face empty ocean, you paid scrap for decoration.
We do not publish fake part IDs. Saturday patches can retune costs. Rank the job each piece does.
S-tier: covered core and hidden loot
S — interior chest, lip spikes, cannon on the board line. Keep the valuable box off the welcome mat. Put spikes on the edge raiders actually step. Seat a cannon so it covers that same step, not the pretty horizon. Leave a harpoon perch that does not require hopping the spike line. This layout still works at Hour 1 when the raft is tiny, and it still works at Hour 20 when you have a second ring.
S-adjacent — Free Reward cannon used as a real gun. The Free Reward cannon is a named on-screen tool, not flavor text. If you claim it and never place it, you threw a defense. If you place it where crew can reload the angle after a death, it belongs next to the core, not as a statue on a third story nobody staffs.
A-tier: staged rings and honest sightlines
A — second ring after the first is actually closed. Expand floor only when the new lip has spikes or a wall and someone can still see it. A-tier crews grow in pulses between raids, not during them.
A — split watch instead of one hero. One player on cannon, one on the chest side, harpoon parked where they can return. The Crew button exists so you are not a pile of random names. Name the watch before the timer starts.
B-tier: workable, wasteful, or raid-dependent
B — walls without spikes. They slow a board. They do not punish it. Fine while you wait on scrap. Not a finished hold.
B — extra cannons on a still-open deck. More barrels look scary. If loot is still outside, raiders ignore the extra gun and grab the box. Spend the next scrap on placement, not a third barrel.
B — turtle while your friends raid. Valid if one person stays. Invalid if “turtle” means everyone left and hoped the walls would play the game.
C and F: screenshots and donations
C — height as armor. Multi-story rafts show up in official Hour-100 art. Height can hide a chest. It also creates climb paths and floors nobody can see from the cannon. If you cannot staff the stairs, you built a ladder for the enemy.
C — spike gardens in the middle of the deck. They hurt your gather path more than a raider who already has a foot on the plank.
F — chest on the outer deck. The most common fail. You gathered for twenty minutes and labeled the loot “please take me.”
F — all crew off-raft. Defenses are not NPCs. A max-18 server will notice an empty boat.
F — cannons aimed at empty water after the raft rotated. Placement is a living job. Walk the board line after you move or add a story.
Chests go where a raider must cross a spike or a watched angle. Expand by moving loot inward first, then growing the floor, then re-spiking the new lip. Scrap packs (50 / 150 / 500 for 49 / 249 / 499 Robux) buy time. They do not move the box. Codes redeem in the Shop; none were working as of 31 August 2026.
Before you craft another wall, stand where a raider would stand. If you can touch the chest without a spike or cannon line, you are not in S or A. Assign the Crew button: harpoon, cannon, chest. Compact if you are short on names.
This ranking is a hold briefing, not a catalog. Walls buy seconds. Cannons buy a lane. Spikes buy a mistake. The chest location decides whether those seconds matter. Build the core, hide the box, staff the angle, and only then argue about a second story. If a raid still pops you, you do not need a new letter — you need someone home when the timer starts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common raft, raid, and code questions.
What is S-tier defense in this game?
An interior chest, spikes on the real board lip, and a cannon covering that same step. Height is optional. Staffing is not.
Are cannons better than spikes?
They do different jobs. Cannons cover a lane. Spikes punish the step. Rank them as a pair, not as a single item race.
Should I expand the raft to defend better?
Only after the current lip is closed. Empty wide decks are C or F. See raft build rankings for footprint advice.
Where can I practice the full hold?
Follow how to defend your raft and keep one crew member on deck. Walls do not play themselves.
Do scrap packs change defense rank?
No. Packs skip grind. They do not move a chest off the outer plank or aim a cannon for you.
