How to Raid in Build and Defend Your Raft
Steal loot from other rafts without donating your own chest — timing, Crew, and a closed home core.
The official pitch for Build and Defend Your Raft puts the PvP in caps: RAID other players’ rafts and STEAL loot. That is not a side mode. On a live server of up to 18 people, raiding is how Hour 1 boats jump a resource gap and how Hour 100 forts stay fed. This page is the raid as a decision, not as an invented combat tree. We do not have a published “press R to board” bind, a matchmaking queue, or a damage table. We do have the loop, the HUD timer, Crew, and the hard rule: never leave your own raft naked.
Read how to defend before you treat this as a license to swim off. Pair roles with raid roles and kit with the weapons tier list once your Crafting Table has actually unlocked the gear.
What a raid is (and what we will not invent)
A raid is you leaving your deck, reaching another player’s raft, and taking loot they failed to cover. The official description stops there. This wiki will not add a fake boarding mini-game, a stealth meter, or a guaranteed chest location. Look at the target with your own camera: chests in the open are the steal; chests behind walls and spikes are a fight; cannons covering the water are a reason to pick a different raft.
If the live session uses a proximity board — you swim or walk onto their tiles — then path through the weak side. If a Saturday patch later adds a formal raid button, it will be described after it exists. Until then, play the geometry in front of you.
Timing beats greed
Look at the top timer before you leave. A fat countdown is time to harpoon and still get home. A thin countdown is time to stand on your own core. Raiding into a low timer with nobody on your chest is how you fund someone else’s Hour 100. Also look at the target’s posture: empty deck, no Crew visible, loot on the rim — that is a steal window. Stacked cannons and a full Crew on the guns — that is a donation window. Pick the first kind.
Gather objectives such as Gathered 0/5 are not a raid excuse. Finish the fraction or accept that you are skipping it for a steal you can actually hold. The harpoon still prints resources without a PvP fight; use it when every nearby raft looks closed.
Do not leave your own raft naked
This is the entire skill ceiling for new raiders. Before you board someone else:
- Loot is inside walls, not on the rim.
- Spikes or cannons cover the obvious board-on tiles.
- Someone is home — you in a moment, or Crew now. The purple Crew button exists for this.
- Your Crafting Table is not the only thing standing in an open field.
If any line is false, you are not raiding; you are walking away from a chest. Solo players skip more raids and take shorter ones. Crewed players assign a holder. The raid roles page is that assignment in writing.
Bring the kit your table has unlocked. Do not invent a superweapon. If the weapons tier list and the live menu disagree, the menu wins.
During and after the steal
Go in, take what the UI lets you take, and leave. Staying to grief an empty deck is time your own raft is unattended. After a successful steal, dump loot into the core, repair anything that broke, and only then look for a second target. After a failed steal, do the same repair pass — pride raids are how you lose the table.
If you were raided while you were raiding, that is the naked-deck lesson landing in real time. Rebuild using how to defend, then shorten the next outing. Saturday patches may change combat feel; they will not make an unattended chest safe.
Steal from open rafts, on a fat timer, with someone holding your core. That is raiding in this game. Everything louder is a highlight clip, not a plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common raft, raid, and code questions.
How do I raid another raft in Build and Defend Your Raft?
Reach another player’s raft on the live 18-player server and steal uncovered loot. This wiki does not invent a hidden raid key. Pick open decks, not armed Hour 100 forts, and read how to defend first.
When should I raid?
When the HUD timer is not about to expire, your own loot is walled, and Crew or you can hold the core. Skip closed, cannon-stacked targets.
What if I play solo?
Raid less and for shorter windows. A naked home deck is a donation. Group with the purple Crew button when you can; roles are on raid roles.
Which weapons should I take?
Whatever your Crafting Table has actually unlocked. Compare options on the weapons tier list and never invent a loadout the live menu does not show.
Can I raid in the first hour?
Only after walls cover loot. First-hour order is still gather, table, shell, then steal — see getting started if that sequence is not in muscle memory yet.
