How to Defend in Build and Defend Your Raft

Walls, cannons, spikes, covered loot, timer awareness, and Crew — before you raid out.

How to Defend

Other players on your Build and Defend Your Raft server will RAID you and STEAL loot. Defense is not a late-game cosmetic layer; it is the reason the Hour 1 boat still has a chest at minute 40. Official thumbs show the toolkit in silhouette: walls, cannons, spikes, chests behind them, flags on top. This page is how those pieces should sit, how the top timer changes your posture, and why Crew is part of the shell. It does not invent damage numbers, fire rates, or unpublished trap recipes. For spend order, use the defenses tier list. For the raid you launch after the shell is closed, use how to raid.

Servers cap at 18. Someone is always close enough.

Cover the loot, not the horizon

Chests and the Crafting Table are the raid magnet. Put them in a core and wrap that core first. Walls break line-of-walk. Spikes punish the board. Cannons cover the water and the deck tiles a raider must cross. Flags do none of those jobs. If your screenshot looks armed from the ocean and open from the chest camera, you have decorated an approach, not defended a vault.

Keep walking distances short so you can repair or restock without a marathon. Sprawl is a defensive failure even when it is a building success. The compact-versus-wide argument lives on how to build; here the rule is simpler: if a cannon cannot see the tile, do not store loot on the tile.

Walls, cannons, spikes — roles, not a shopping list

  • Walls — the first delay. They force raiders to path instead of sprinting onto the chest. Close gaps. A three-sided box is a funnel, not a fort.
  • Spikes — the cost of standing on your rim. Place them on the tiles people actually land on, not in a pretty ring around empty ocean.
  • Cannons — the Free Reward cannon on the right of the HUD is a claim widget; the cannons you build are the ones that cover approaches. Angle them at board-on edges and water lanes you can actually see from the core.
  • Chests — inside. Always inside.
  • Flags — last. They mark a fort that already works.

We will not rank a spike recipe we have not seen. If the build menu offers a piece, place it where it overlaps another piece. Isolated guns on a long pier get walked around.

Timer posture

The HUD timer (screenshots show values such as 01:58) is not background art. When it is fat, you can harpoon and upgrade. When it is thin, stop vanity placement and stand on the core. A raid that lands while you are mid-decorate on the far flagpole is how Hour 1 boats die. If you do not know what the timer is counting toward — the live UI does not print a full legend in the materials we have — still treat a low number as get home.

Do not start a long gather loop on a low timer with the chest unattended. Either Crew holds the deck or you hold it yourself.

Crew is a defensive structure

The purple Crew button is how you stop being a one-person island on an 18-player server. One player on the cannon, one on harpoon, one repairing spikes is a shell. One player swimming to raid while nobody is home is a donation. Assign the boring job: someone stays in the core. The raid checklist is the pre-leave pass/fail for that assignment; if the checklist is red, you are not raiding, you are abandoning.

Solo is allowed. Solo means you raid less and wall more. There is no shame in skipping a steal to keep the table.

After a hit

If you get raided, rebuild the core before you chase. Chasing with an open chest is a second steal waiting to happen. Repair spikes, refill whatever the UI lets you refill, feed the Crafting Table if the raid dropped you down a gear feeling, then go. Saturday patches can change piece feel; they do not change this order.

A defended raft is a closed core, overlapping guns and spikes, a timer you actually look at, and at least one person who did not leave. Everything else is a flag.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common raft, raid, and code questions.

What should I build first to defend my raft?

Walls and spikes around loot and the Crafting Table, then cannons on the approaches. Flags wait. See the defenses tier list for priority among pieces.

Do I need Crew to defend?

You can solo, but the purple Crew button is how you keep a body on the core while someone harpoons or raids. Solo players should raid less and wall more.

What does the HUD timer mean for defense?

Treat a low countdown as a signal to stand on the core instead of decorating. Do not start a raid or a long gather with the chest unattended.

When is it safe to raid someone else?

When the core is closed and someone — you or Crew — can hold it. Use how to raid and the raid checklist before you leave.

Are defense damage numbers listed here?

No. This wiki does not invent fire rates or spike damage. Place overlapping pieces the live menu actually offers, and watch Saturday patches for changes.
